SAP ABAP is a high-level programming language developed by the German software company SAP SE.
ABAP – Advanced Business Application Programming is a default programming language for SAP applications, which runs in the SAP ABAP runtime environment, created and used for the development of application programs including like Reports, Module Pool Programming and Interfaces.
SAP uses ABAP to implement its own applications on the NetWeaver ABAP platform and the SAP customers use ABAP to modify the functionality of SAP applications or to build their own applications on the NetWeaver ABAP platform.
ABAP has an abstraction between the business applications, the database and the operating system. This ensures that the applications do not depend directly upon a specific server or database platform and they can be easily ported from one platform to another.
ABAP is the oldest and the most widely used of SAP’s 4 major application platforms, which also includes SAP NetWeaver Java, SAP HANA and SAP Cloud Platform.
ABAP is different from other programming languages like C++ and Java. Where C++ and Java programs are stored as external files and the ABAP programs exist within the database in two forms specifically.
The most important feature of SAP ABAP programs is the fact that a single program can be written and leveraged to operate around a diverse range of databases.
This feature made possible by SAP ABAP’s inherent database interface. The interface converts the database independent systems into such statements that are understood by the underlying database.
